The Ruhr area is not only Germany’s largest academic hub, but also an epicenter of innovation that fosters close interactions between academia and the private sector – and our alliance provides students and researchers from around the world with an open gateway to our region.

More than 120,000 students, including 19,000 from abroad, and over 9,000 researchers study and work at the UA Ruhr universities (Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund and University of Duisburg-Essen). The three universities jointly have 800 partnerships with universities in over 130 countries and a combined annual budget of close to 1.4 billion euros – which provides our students and researchers with virtually unlimited resources to develop their ideas and opportunities to share their thoughts. To support our already strong global network for international exchange and collaboration, the UA Ruhr has also created academic liaison offices for North America and Eastern Europe/Central Asia.

Research Alliance Ruhr

Our research center is part of the Research Alliance Ruhr aiming at "Best Education & Excellent Research". Together, we aim at the Ruhr area as one scientific region of excellence that unlocks a new level of interdisciplinary cooperation.

The Research Center One Health – from Molecules to Systems investigates the fundamental mechanisms of health and disease, starting from the molecular level right through to higher-level systems. The ecosystem serves as a context for also considering the complex interrelationships between environmental health, animal health and human health, in keeping with the “One Health” concept. After all, humans can only stay healthy in an intact environment.

The Research Center Chemical Sciences and Sustainability aims to understand chemical reactions, processes and products at the molecular level. These insights will open up technological applications in chemistry, building materials and pharmaceuticals that are innovative, environmentally friendly and economically competitive. It is essential to regard solvent molecules as active participants and not as an inert matrix in order to optimize processes in solvents such as water.

The Research Center Future Energy Materials and Systems aims to develop new materials that are urgently needed for energy carrier generation, energy conversion, storage, and transport in a targeted, rapid and sustainable manner. The goal is to understand fundamental properties and relevant processes in the generation and use of complex materials in order to develop building blocks for a sustainable energy system. At the same time, the college is looking into regenerative processes to replace energy-intensive ways of materials production and processing.

Beyond our excellence in research and education the Research Alliance Ruhr is hosted in a well-connected urban environment with the best international flight and train infrastructure. With our families, we enjoy the nature of the river Ruhr that named this picturesque area and its surrounding villages. With major support also for transit yourself and your family, our joint Dual Career Network assists in job transition. Similarly, the three universities support our young scientist via the Research Academy Ruhr, the local research institutes (three Max-Planck-, two Fraunhofer- and two Leibniz-Institutes), as well as entrepreneurial and transfer institutes (e.g. TechnologieZentrumDortmund).
