The CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems is the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction. It takes place from Apr 26, 2025 to May 1, 2025 in Yokohama, Japan. We are delighted to announce that another of our researchers' papers has been accepted for CHI 2025.
Prof Angela Sasse:
6. full paper with Felix Reichmann, Annalina Buckmann, Konstantin Fischer and Alena Naiakshina: "Bridging the Gap Between Usable Security Research and Open-Source Practice — Lessons From a Long-Term Engagement With VeraCrypt"
VeraCrypt is an open-source encryption tool that is regarded as secure but difficult to use. The paper describes our 4-year effort to improve its usability, by iteratively redesigning the UI and instructions and providing the code for usability improvements to the VeraCrypt community. But we found the community had concerns about accepting what they saw as unsolicited gifts from researchers, and the subsequent discussions provide valuable insights for future engagement and collaboration.
