Working closely with PhD researcher Mislav Stojanovic, Chris contributed to an ongoing project exploring how reinforcement learning models can be made safer and more reliable. “My role was mainly to find improvements for Mislav’s approach by running a lot of experiments inspired by methods from other parts of the RL literature,” he explains.
For Chris, this internship wasn’t just about coding or data analysis — it was about understanding how computer science research actually works. “Compared to economics, where I have some prior research experience, AI research moves much faster and is mainly driven by top-tier conferences,” he says. “In economics, it’s often journal-based, with publication processes that can take a year or longer.”
The hands-on nature of the work, combined with RC Trust’s interdisciplinary environment, left a strong impression. “I really enjoyed hearing about projects from other areas — for example, from statistics or psychology — and seeing how differently people approach AI-related topics,” Chris recalls. Conversations with colleagues from other countries also broadened his view: “Talking with Mislav about the differences between research environments in Croatia and Germany was fascinating — and of course, we also discussed a lot beyond research.”
Although his stay was relatively short, Chris says it was an experience that may have shaped his academic future. “I’m still weighing my options,” he admits, “but the internship definitely strengthened my interest in pursuing a PhD.”
When asked what stood out most during his time at RC Trust, his answer comes easily:
“Being surrounded by passionate researchers from different backgrounds, all united by the goal of making AI more trustworthy.”
