Fiona Lau has joined the Human-AI Interaction group led by Prof. Sven Mayer at TU Dortmund University and RC Trust as a PhD student. With her focus on human-centered generative AI and interactive systems, she strengthens the group’s research on meaningful collaboration between humans and intelligent technologies.
Fiona completed her Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction at LMU Munich. In her thesis, she explored human-in-the-loop image generation for fashion, developing approaches to iteratively adapt AI-generated content to individual user preferences using Bayesian optimization. Alongside her studies, she gained experience as a software engineer in the automotive industry.
In her doctoral research, Fiona investigates how humans and AI systems can collaborate effectively through interactive feedback and co-creation. Her work explores how users can shape AI behavior and how intelligent systems can be designed to support – and extend – human capabilities rather than replace them. She is particularly interested in generative AI, human-AI co-creation, and user-centered systems that preserve human agency. In the upcoming semester, she will also contribute to teaching as a tutor in the course Human-Centered Machine Learning at TU Dortmund University.
Beyond her research, Fiona enjoys playing volleyball, practicing and teaching yoga, playing the piano, and spending time outdoors with friends – activities that reflect her collaborative and balanced approach to both research and life.
RC Trust warmly welcomes Fiona Lau and looks forward to her contributions to advancing human-centered AI.
