For PhD researchers interested in gaining research experience in industry, the path is not always obvious. How does a program like the Google Student Researcher Program work, what does the application process involve, and which academic qualifications matter? Dr. Burim Ramosaj will address these questions when he returns to TU Dortmund University on October 9 for a guest talk on the program.
His talk, Bridging Academia and Industry: The Google Student Researcher Program (PhD), will provide practical insights into a program that allows doctoral researchers to contribute to exploratory research projects at Google.
Burim Ramosaj will explain how the program is structured, which academic and technical qualifications are relevant, and how the application and interview process works. He will also address practical questions such as project duration, location, and time commitment, as well as how applicants can present their research background and experience.
Sharing experience with early-career researchers
Providing this kind of orientation is not entirely new for Burim Ramosaj. During his time at TU Dortmund University, he spoke publicly about his own experience with research funding and application processes. In a 2022 interview, for example, Burim Ramosaj reflected on his successful application to the NRW KI-Starter program and offered practical advice to researchers considering a similar step.
His return to Dortmund now adds another perspective: the transition from academic research to an industry environment. Burim Ramosaj completed his doctorate in statistics at TU Dortmund University under the supervision of Prof. Markus Pauly and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher in his group. His research focused on statistical inference with machine-learning methods and included work on Random Forests.
Today, Burim Ramosaj works at Google in Zurich, where he is Tech Lead for Forecasting and Operations in Trust & Safety Data Science and also works as a Senior Research Data Scientist. His work applies statistical methods, machine learning, and AI to questions including forecasting and data-driven decision-making in Trust & Safety.
