The Chair of Mathematical Statistics and Applications in Industry, led by Prof. Markus Pauly, is part of the Department of Statistics at TU Dortmund University – the only independent Department of Statistics in the German-speaking world. The group focuses on developing rigorous statistical methods that enable researchers and practitioners to draw reliable conclusions from complex data.
A central goal of the research is to extract trustworthy insights from data while gaining a deeper understanding of the underlying processes that gerate them. To this end, the team develops statistical models and algorithms based on fundamental principles such as uncertainty quantification, statistical inference, and modern data analysis. Their work spans the entire data science pipeline – from experimental design and sample size planning to modeling, prediction, and complex inference.
The group’s research covers areas such as asymptotic and nonparametric statistics, multivariate and repeated-measures analysis, resampling techniques, survival and time series analysis, meta-analysis, as well as statistical and machine learning methods in both theory and practice. A particular focus lies on developing methods that remain reliable and interpretable even in challenging data settings.
A key aspect of the chair’s work is bridging the gap between mathematical theory and real-world applications. The methods developed by the group are applied in fields such as medicine, psychology, logistics, and industry, where reliable statistical evidence is essential for informed decision-making. The group maintains active collaborations with international research partners across Europe, the United States, and Asia.
Through its strong focus on methodological rigor and uncertainty-aware data analysis, the chair contributes directly to the mission of the RC Trust: advancingtrustworthy, transparent and reliable data science and AI systems that can support responsible innovation in science and society.
